That’s great because one of the most important decisions that you’ll make before starting a business is choosing the right business to go into.

Actually, it’s the most important decision because it could mean the difference between success and failure.

Studies have shown that of the thousands of businesses that are being started each day, many of them are bound to fail because they’re not started the right way.

What is the right way?

Imagine what would happen if you throw in all your life’s savings and you suddenly realize that you chose the wrong type of business!

To prevent this from happening, there are some questions that you need to answer before starting a business:

1. Will you enjoy doing it?  Is it something that you’ll enjoy doing while you are in the process of building your business?  When you are in this kind of situation, everyday is fun.  You don’t mind the long hours and the hard work that goes with it.

2. Do you know what you are doing? It is important that when you go into business, you have the necessary knowledge of the business.  Ideally, before you go into it, you have experience working on it from your previous employment.  Or you may have undergone first some training on it like when you buy a franchise.

3. Who’s buying from you? Does your business have ready customers that can absorb what you can produce for you to make money?  Or if you are going into a market where you have many competitors, what would be your comfortable share of the pie to survive.

4. What makes you unique?  To survive in the marketplace, be aware that your continued existence will depend on how different you are from other businesses that are in the same business as you.  As much as possible, you must have something that the others don’t have and you are not just another copycat.

5. How much money do you want to make? When you go into business, there are certain psychological levels of income that you need to meet for you to say it’s worth it. Of course during the early stages of your business you cannot expect to make so much but once you reach its maximum potential, you should make according to what you expect in order to sustain your interest.

After giving your honest answers to all of these questions, you are now ready to address the next important one:  How do you make sure that you’ll start your business the right way?

When one of your teeth needs to be pulled out, what do you do?  Do you pull it out yourself?  Of course you don’t.  You need the help of an expert like a dentist to do it for you, right?

It’s the same when deciding on something you are not familiar with, you need an expert who can help you come up with the right decision so you avoid costly mistakes.

For example, when it comes to getting professional advice on certain business matters, you go to an accountant or a lawyer.

These people are valuable help to business, no doubt.

If it’s knowing where your money goes, it’s best that you have an accountant to help you set up the proper recording of your financial transactions.  When it comes to legalities, you consult a lawyer.

But with the process of getting advice to help you choose the right business for you, it’s not wise that you entrust this solely to an accountant or a lawyer.

You need the help of another specialist who is an expert on business start-up and development and with solid track record of helping small business owners start and grow their businesses.

This way, your chances of success is assured because you get professional help just like when you ask help from an accountant or a lawyer.

A business start-up specialist can expertly help you do a systematic self-assessment of your knowledge, experience, skills and interests…for you to discover the right business model that fits you well.

This type of service is usually bundled by a consultant in a package of services such as preparation of  business plans and feasibility studies.
